Wayfinding is more than just the random placement of arrows and labels. It is a complex visual communication system based on psychological, ergonomic and architectural principles. An effective system gives the visitor an immediate, unthinking answer to three basic questions:
- Positioning (Orientation): “Where exactly am I?”
- Destination (Destination): “Where do I want to go?”
- Route Planning (Route Monitoring): “How can I get there in the easiest and safest way?”
If the answer to any question is delayed, the visitor develops cognitive dissonance – stress. In a hospital, this can hinder recovery, and in a mall it can shorten shopping time.
